Privacy policy

Your records stay on your phone.

easySED is built so we never see your trips, your documents or your personal details. This policy explains the little that does leave your device, and why.

Who we are

easySED is run by Jorge Andrews (“we”, “us”). We make the easySED iPhone app and run this website, easysed.co.uk. We are the data controller for the personal data described here. You can contact us about anything in this policy at support@easysed.co.uk.

The short version

There is no easySED account. We don’t ask for your name, email or password to use the app.
Everything you enter in the app, and every document you attach, is stored only on your iPhone.
We don’t use analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind, and we never sell data.
Your first year of easySED Pro is free. To work out when it ends, and later whether you subscribe, our subscription service RevenueCat uses an anonymous ID. If you subscribe, Apple handles the payment.

Information stored on your iPhone

The app keeps the following in its private storage on your device:

  • Your trips: dates, vessel, employer, ports, port calls and notes.
  • Evidence you attach, such as photos of discharge book pages, sign-off letters, boarding passes and PDFs.
  • The details you choose to add for your audit pack: your name, National Insurance number and employer.
  • Your settings, such as reminders and which tax years you’ve marked as claimed.
  • The date you first used the app, which is when your free year of easySED Pro starts.

We cannot see or access any of this. It isn’t sent to us or to anyone else. Apple may include it in your iCloud or computer backups if you have backups switched on; that is controlled by you in your iPhone’s settings and covered by Apple’s privacy policy.

Camera, photos and files

The app asks for access to your camera or photos only when you choose to add evidence. The pictures and files you pick are copied into the app on your iPhone and are never uploaded.

Reminders

Reminders, including the reminders before your free year ends, are scheduled on your iPhone as local notifications. No reminder information is sent to a server.

Sharing and exports

Audit packs, claim packs and backups are created on your iPhone. They only leave it when you choose to share or save them, for example by email, AirDrop or the Files app, to a place you pick. Once shared, the recipient’s handling of those files is up to them.

Your free year and subscriptions (easySED Pro)

Every new user gets every easySED feature free for their first 12 months, counted from the day they first use the app. Nothing is charged automatically: when the free year ends, you choose whether to subscribe. If you don’t, your records stay on your iPhone and you can still view them and make a backup.

To work out when your free year started, and whether you have a subscription, the app uses RevenueCat, a subscription service. RevenueCat receives:

  • a random, anonymous ID created when you first open the app;
  • the date your Apple ID first downloaded easySED, from the App Store, so reinstalling the app doesn’t change when your free year ends;
  • if you subscribe, your purchase and subscription details, such as the plan, the dates it started and renews, price, currency and App Store country;
  • basic technical information needed to connect, such as the app version, iOS version and IP address.

This is used only to give you your free year, unlock easySED Pro if you subscribe, restore it on a new phone and let us see how many people subscribe. It is not linked to your name, email or anything you store in the app, and it is not used for advertising. The legal basis is that it’s needed to provide the free year and any subscription you choose.

Subscription payments are made through your Apple ID and processed by Apple. We never receive your card or bank details.

RevenueCat is based in the United States. Where your data is transferred outside the UK, it is protected by appropriate safeguards under UK data protection law. Subscription records are kept for as long as needed to provide the service and meet legal and accounting requirements.

You can cancel at any time in your iPhone’s Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions.

This website

If you join our mailing list, we collect your email address and your consent to receive updates. The list is run by Brevo, an email service based in the EU. We use your email only to send news about easySED and your early access. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email, or by contacting us, and we’ll then delete your address from the list.

The website is hosted by GitHub Pages and uses Google Fonts. Like most websites, these services receive your IP address and basic browser information when you visit, to deliver the pages and keep them secure. We don’t use cookies for tracking or analytics.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how it’s used, and to withdraw consent at any time. For anything stored in the app, you are already in full control: you can edit or delete trips and evidence, or delete the app to remove everything from your iPhone.

To make a request, email support@easysed.co.uk. If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

easySED is intended for working seafarers and is not directed at children under 16.

Changes to this policy

If we change how easySED handles data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app’s release notes.
